正定

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: right concentration / correct determination

Senses:

  • Right meditation. One of the parts of the Eightfold Correct Path 八正道. The maintenance of focused mindfulness in formal meditation. There are two types of right concentration: the mundane 世間 and the supramundane 出世間. The former is associated with the attainment of the four stages of meditative concentration 四禪 and with rebirth in the heavens of the form realm 色界. The latter is associated with the attainment of the four supramundane paths of the stream-enterer 預流, the once-returner 一來, the non-returner 不還, and the arhat 羅漢. These attainments bring about the eventual cessation of successive rebirth in the families of the humans 人家家 or the gods 天家家 (Skt. samyak-samādhi, samādhi, samāpatti, nyāma, samyak-sthiti, susthita; Pāli sammā-samādhi; Tib. yang dag pa'i ting nge 'dzin). 〔雜阿含經T 99.2.204a5〕 [Charles Muller, Billy Brewster; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, Yokoi, YBh-Ind, Hirakawa]
  • Correct determination for the attainment of Buddhahood; assured success in the attainment of Buddhahood. See 正定聚 (Skt. samyaktva-niyata; niyata). 〔阿彌陀經疏 HBJ 1.563b1〕 [Charles Muller]
