Basic Meaning: five stages of Dongshan
Senses:
Dongshan Liangjie 洞山良价 (807–869) is known for two sets of five stages that he established in his teaching: the five stages of correct and partial 正偏五位 (or 偏正五位), and the five stages of practice and merit 功勳五位.

The term
'five stages of Dongshan'
is often used to refer to only the first of the four sets mentioned above: 正偏五位. [Stefan Grace; source(s): Ui, ZGDJT]
This term can also be a reference to the four types of five stages associated with Dongshan, including the two mentioned above in addition to the two created, respectively, by Caoshan Benji 曹山本寂 (840–901) and Shishuang Qingzhu石霜慶諸 (807–888). These are: the five stages of the emperor and his vassals 君臣五位, and the five stages of princes 王子五位.
