Basic Meaning: Dongshanʼs Disclosure of the Deep Implication of the Five Ranks
Senses:
One fascicle. Also known as Wuwei xianjue 五位顯訣. Originally compiled by Huixia 慧霞 (n.d.), and Guanghui 廣輝 (n.d.) (X1236.197c9). A compilation of various prose commentaries on Dongshan Liangjie 洞山良价 (807–869) doctrine of the Five Ranks 五位, written by Dongshan and other Chinese Caodong school 曹洞宗 masters. The verses are quoted to illustrate the commentaries. The compilers of the work are believed to have been direct disciples of Dongshan, and thus to have lived at the beginning of the 10th century. The original text went through several revisions, and numerous commentaries were gradually added to it during the Song 宋代 and Yuan 元代 dynasties. After the text had been brought to Japan, it underwent one more revision at the hands of several scholar-monks of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 and was published in 1680.
