Basic Meaning: five prenatal periods
Senses:
The five periods of the unborn child in the uterus: (1) kalala 羯剌藍 (凝滑), the first week after conception. (2) arbuda 頞部曇, 阿部曇 (皰), the second week. (3) peśī 閉尸 (凝結), the coagulating stage—the third week. (4) ghana 鍵南 (凝厚), the fourth week. (5) praśākha 鉢羅奢佉 (支節), from the fifth to the thirty-sixth week. There are, in the classical literature, various divisions of this period. For example, the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra divides the period into eight stages, while the Mahīśāsakas and the Saṃmitīya-nikāyas divide it into six. Also written 五位胎中. The five postnatal periods are 胎外五位, and combined together, there are ten periods 十時 (Skt. pañca-pratisandhyaḥ; Tib.mngal gyi gnas skabs lnga).
