three ways of knowing
- Three means of valid cognition according to the early school of Hetuvidyā: (1) 現量 (pratyakṣa-pramāṇa) to perceive directly through the senses; (2) 比量 (anumāna-pramāṇa) to know by inference; (3) 聖教量 (āgama-pramāṇa) to know by the authority of the scriptures. In this sense, see also 量, 四量, 五量. (Skt. trividhaṃ pramāṇam, trīṇi pramāṇāni, pramāṇa-traya; Tib. tshad ma gsum) [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Hirakawa, YBh-Ind]

- (1) Reasoning for oneself 自比量; (2) reasoning for others 他比量, and (3) reasoning for both 共比量. See 三比量. [resp. Charles Muller]
