giả
a designation
- (Skt. prajñapti; Tib. gdags pa) A nominal term. Used in contrast to terms like truth 眞, or reality 實, referring to something that is unsubstantial, lacking inherent existence—which exists only in reference to the name assigned to it. This is called 假名有. 假 is in many situations interchangeable with the notion of "expedient" 方便, or methods of practice and teaching that are not ultimately true, but are used nominally. This notion of nominal teaching—probably based on Buddhist influences—was also to be seen in currency in Song Neo-Confucianism, usually indicated by the character 權, which is also used in Buddhist texts. [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura,YBh-Ind, JEBD, Yokoi, Iwanami]
- The use of a metaphor which, though not truly existent, is used for explanation (Skt. upacāra). [resp. Charles Muller]
- An institution or establishment. To establish a concept. The gathering of words and/or sentences. [resp. Charles Muller]
- Conventionality; conventional [provisional] [existence]. That all things, though empty of substantial Being, have a conventional or provisional reality. (Skt. prajñaptirupādāya) [resp. Paul Swanson]
- In Tiantai, the three fundamental propositions or 三諦 are 空假中 emptiness, or noumenon; the empirical, or phenomenal; and the mean. (Skt. saṃketa; sacet; aupacārika, kapaṭa, kṛtrima, prajñaptitas, prajñapti-dharma, prajñapti-vastu, prajñapti-sat, prājñaptika, mṛṣā, yadi, vyavahāra, saṃvṛti, saprajñapti; Pāli paññātti) [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Soothill, Hirakawa]
- la conditionnalité [resp. Paul Swanson]
