Gengō
- (914–995) A Heian-period monk of the Shingon school, born into the Fujiwara family. He received the dharma transmission initiation from Shunnyū 淳祐 in 949. Thereafter he lived at the Enmeiin 延命院, built by Retired Emperor Daigo. Gradually, Gengō
gained a reputation for conducting successful rain-making rituals. Under Gengō's disciple Ningai, to whom Gengō gave the dharma transmission in 990, the lineage in which Shunnyū
stood became known as the Ono school of Shingon (in contrast to the Hirosawa school).
However, in 965 Gengō received another initiation from Kangū 寬空, in which he received the Hirosawa school teachings. In 978, he became head monk (chōja) at the Tōji, and also began to serve as hōmu, head of the Office for Clerical Affairs. [resp. Heather Blair]
