Inquiry into the Origin of Humanity
- Full title is 華嚴原人論. A treatise by the Huayan scholar Zongmi 宗密. 1 fasc. T 1886.45.708a-710c. An essay which outlines the Buddhist teachings as five levels of teaching taxonomy 判教 consisting of the teachings of:
- humans and gods —人天教
- the lesser vehicle —小乘教
- the great vehicle's teaching of phenomenal appearances —大乘法相教
- the great vehicle's refutation of phenomenal appearances —大乘破相教
- the direct revelation of the nature — 顯性教
This text was probably written in part as response to the polemical tracts against Buddhism written by Han Yu 韓愈 (768–824). Zongmi, as he does in many of his other works, classifies various teachings of Buddhism on a scale of relative profundity, but in this work specifically critiques the weaknesses of the teachings of Confucianism and Daoism, which he regards as far inferior to Buddhism. Translated into English by Peter Gregory. This work formed the basis for some of the arguments assembled in the Buddhist apologetic essay Hyeonjeong non 顯正論 by the early Joseon monk Gihwa.References
