- Four Māra-enemies. The four kinds of māra (demons) that make trouble for sentient beings:
- Kleśa-māra 煩惱魔, the demon of ill desires that injure one's body and mind.
- Skandha-māra 陰魔 (or 蘊魔), the demon of aggregates. The five elemental aggregates of body, perception, conception, volition, and consciousness cause living beings many kinds of suffering.
- Mṛtya-māra 死魔, the demon of death, who cuts off the lives of all living beings.
- Devaputramāra 天子魔 (or 自在天魔). The demon named Paranirmita-vaśavartin 他化自在天, who is the king of the sixth heaven in the world of desire and who tries to prevent living beings from doing good. 〔佛地經論 T 1530.26.292b07; 瑜伽論 T 1579.30.776b18〕
