great shrine hall
- [Korea] Great Shrine Hall. Also called the Jeweled Hall of the Great Hero 大雄寶殿. This hall is dedicated to the historical Buddha Śākyamuni. As a rule, the great shrine hall is located at the center of temple complex. Two attendant bodhisattvas support Śākyamuni Buddha: One is Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva 文殊菩薩, the left-hand attendant who is regarded as the idealization or personification of the wisdom of the Buddha. The other is Samantabhadra Bodhisattva 普賢菩薩, the right-hand attendant who symbolizes the teaching, meditation, and practice of the Buddha. Most Dharma assemblies take place in this hall. See also 本堂.
