discursive thought and investigation
- Initial mental application 尋 and subsequent discursive reasoning 伺; reflection and investigation (Skt. vitarka-vicāra, tarka, tarka-cāra, vitarka, vitarka-cāra, sa-vitarka-vicāra; Tib. rtog pa dang dpyod pa). These are two kinds of mental functions whose nature is not inherently good or evil 四不定法.
Vitarka 尋 is a mental function that tends to increase, and vicāra 伺 one which tends to diminish, definiteness and clearness in the stream of consciousness. They usually operate in tandem with each other, as, when one views an object, one first ascertains it roughly, and then scrutinizes it in detail. In one place in the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra it is suggested that there are cases where they might also be seen as derivative afflictions 隨煩惱, since if one sustains these two activities for too long, one may incur fatigue and injury.
