mind-made body
- Also written 意成身 (Skt. manomaya-kāya). A body as born out of a certain kind of intent or mindfulness: thus the bodhisattva body, śrāvaka body, etc. 〔二障義 HBJ 1.797b 〕. The body of a buddha is not arisen from the five skandhas—it is created out of consciousness. (See the 寶性論, T 31, p. 83b.) This can also be done by a bodhisattva in the bhūmi levels, in order to aid sentient beings. See 三種意生身; in the case of buddhas, also written 意生化身 as well as 變易生.. Manomaya is transliterated as 摩奴末耶 (Skt. manomayâtmabhāva, ātmabhāvāmanomayāḥ, manomaya-dharma-kāya, manomaya-skandha) [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura]
