- (648–714). An important master of the early Chinese Faxiang 法相 tradition. He left home at the age of 15, studying with Xuanzang 玄奘 and later with Kuiji 窺基, gaining recognition as an outstanding student of the latter. He ended up doing much commentarial work, writing an important commentary on the Cheng weishi lun 成唯識論. He also focused a sizeable portion of his work on Buddhist logic 因明. He is recorded in the Biographies of Eminent Monks as the second patriarch of the Faxiang school. Is also known by the name of his home area Zizhou 淄州 in Henan 河南道. In Japan, he is known as one of the three founders of Faxiang, along with Kuiji and Zhizhou 智周. His secular surname was Li 劉, and he was from Pengcheng 彭城 (apparently Zizhou was the old family home). He is the author of the following texts: 法華玄贊義決 T 1724; 金光明最勝王經疏 T 1788; 十一面神咒心經義疏 T 1802; 成唯識論了義燈
T 1832; 因明義斷 T 1841; 因明入正理論義纂要 T 1842; 勸發菩提心集 T 1862.375a03; 能顯中邊慧日論 T 1863. A funerary stele inscription recounting details of his life is preserved in X1651(9). [resp. Charles Muller, Michael Radich; source(s): Hôbôgirin-Répertoire]
