Mahinda
- Or Mahendra, son of King Aśoka of the Maurya dynasty of ancient India, accredited with the transmission of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Also transliterated as 摩訶因陀羅, translated as 大帝. He became a monk under Moggaliputta-tissa at the age of twenty, after which he traveled to Śrī Lanka as a missionary. Later he asked his younger sister, Saṃghamittā, to work with him, and together they firmly established Buddhism in Śrī Lanka. He is said to have transplanted a sapling of the Bodhi Tree from India. He died in Śrī Lanka. (Pāli Mahinda). 〔善見律毘婆沙 T 1462.24.681c8; 經律異相 T 2121.53.25c26〕 [resp. cmuller; source(s): Yokoi, Soothill, JEBD]
