• A common term used to describe the way the Pure Land practice liberates the practitioner. Ouyi Zhixu 蕅益智旭, in his Amituojing yaojie, describes this as one of the five inconceivable meanings of Pure Land practice, and gives its meaning as not having to wait until one has cut off delusions 言不可思議者略有五意。一橫超三界不俟斷惑故。 〔阿彌陀經要解 T 1762.37.372c6〕 In many contexts it seems to indicate the Pure Land as a kind of "lateral escape" rather than a "vertical transcendence" that is available to ordinary people.
