dharma-body
- Translated as reality body, truth body, law body, etc. In general Mahāyāna teaching, the dharma-body is a name for absolute existence, the manifestation of all existences—the true body of reality, or Buddha as eternal principle; the body of essence that is pure, possesses no marks of distinction, and is the same as emptiness (Skt. dharmakāya). The dharma-body is one of the three bodies 三身 of the Buddha. The Buddha's body of the universe—the body of truth that lacks form. The basis of all things. In texts such as the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith the dharma-body is seen as being equivalent to the tathāgatagarbha; it is also identified with the one mind. [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): JEBD, Yokoi]
- In Sarvâstivāda 有部, one of the two bodies 二身 of the Buddha, with the other being his physical body 生身佛. Also understood as the correct teaching of the Buddha, or the meritorious dharma of the ten powers. A collection of dharmas. In Yogâcāra theory, the dharma-body possesses the pure dharma-world, as well as the Great Perfect Mirror Wisdom. [resp. Charles Muller]
- The Dharma (teaching) as body, as opposed to the physical body of the Buddha. [resp. Charles Muller]
- Esoteric Buddhism includes a teaching of four kinds of dharma-body 四種法身. [resp. Charles Muller]
- According to Hakuin 白隱, one of the categories of kōan. A "dharma-body kōan " is one that makes clear the absolute reality-principle (Buddha-mind) that penetrates all existence. [resp. Charles Muller]
- (Skt. dharma-śarīra; tathāgata-dharma-kāya, dharmatā, dhātu, buddha-kāya, buddhatā, vigraha, saddharma-kāya; Pāli dhamma-kāya; Tib. chos sku) [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Hirakawa, YBh-Ind]
- Syn. with 實相身. [resp. Charles Muller]
- le corps de Loi [resp. Paul Swanson]
