Dongshan Liangjie
- (807–869). An influential Chinese Chan master, originally from Zhejiang. One of the most frequently cited teachers in Chan literature, considered as a co-founder of the Caodong school 曹洞宗 of Chan, known posthumously as Wuben 悟本. Said to have recited the prajñā sūtras a youth, he was ordained at around the age of twenty. He first studied under such masters as Nanquan Puyuan 南泉普願 and Weishan Lingyou 潙山靈祐, and later Yunyan Dansheng 雲巖曇成, for whom he became a dharma-heir. Based on the combined teaching style of him and his student Caoshan 曹山, the Caodong tradition would be established. Among his writings were the Baojing sanmei ge 寶鏡三昧歌, Xuan zhong ming 玄中銘, and Dongshan yulu 洞山語錄. 〔瑞州洞山良价禪師語錄, 宋高僧傳, 景德傳燈錄, 禪學思想史〕 [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Yokoi]
