(711–782), the sixth Tiantai patriarch (sixth patriarch if one takes Zhiyi as the
first; ninth patriarch if the lineage is traced back to Nāgârjuna
龍樹), also known as Jingxi 荆溪 (also 荊溪
; located in present day Wujin 武進 commandery in Jiangsu 江蘇
province) after his place of origin; secular name was Qi 戚. He was
originally a Confucian scholar who, after studying Tiantai for 20
years, entered the Buddhist order at age 38. He studied the precepts
under Tanyi 曇一, subsequently
studying the Mohe zhiguan 摩訶止觀 at Kaiyuansi 開元寺. After the passing of Xuanlang
玄朗, he worked hard for the promotion
of the Tiantai teachings, and in the process, studied deeply in the
competing systems of Huayan 華嚴 and
Faxiang 法相. After Zhiyi 智顗, Zhanran is considered to be the most
influential figure in formulating the Tiantai system of doctrine and
practice. He wrote extensive commentaries on Zhiyi's works, such as
the Fahua xuanyi shiqian 法華玄義釋籤, the
Jin'gang bei lun (Adamantine
Scalpel) 金剛錍論,
Zhiguan fuxing zhuan hongjue 止觀輔行傳弘決, and
others. He was known by the posthumous titles of 荊溪尊者, 妙樂大師, and 圓通尊者. [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Iwanami, Michael Radich]
