concentration without thought
- Concentration without conceptualization; concentration of no thought; the meditative attainment without ideation. One of the six states of inactivity of mind 無心位. The state of concentration that is the cause of being born into no-thought heaven—wherein all mental actions and functions of the first six consciousnesses are stopped. In Abhidharmakośa theory, one of the fourteen factors not associated with mind. In Yogâcāra theory, one of the twenty-four factors not associated with mind 心不相應行法. This concentration is also practiced by non-Buddhists, and is called a tainted concentration with the nature of goodness. It is tainted because the mano-consciousness is still producing self-view. In contrast, nirodha-samāpatti 滅盡定 is only attained by Buddhist sages who fully apprehend the empty character of phenomena. (Skt. asaṃjñi-samāpatti, asaṃjñā-samāpatti, asaṃjñi-samāpanna, āsaṃjñika; Tib 'du shes med pa'i snyoms 'jug; 'du shes med pa'i snyoms par 'jug pa)〔瑜伽論 T 1579.30.293c8〕.
