nescience entrenchments
In Huiyuan's commentary on the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith, this entrenchment is equated with the cognitive hindrances 智障 (T 1843.44.188c5). The Compendium of Buddhist Translated Terms says: "innate, nonobstructing, indeterminate nescience that does not yet have the aspects of attachment and negativity is called innate nescience."
根本無明無覆無記 未有愛惡相 名無明住地
〔翻譯名義集 T 2131.54.1143c21〕
The Benye jing interprets somewhat differently, stating that the entrenchment of nescience is present before the other four. "Since, based on these four kinds of entrenchments, one gives rise to all afflictions, this constitutes the initial arising of the four entrenchments. Prior to these four entrenchments, there is no phenomenon that is arisen; therefore it is called the beginningless entrenched nescience." 〔菩薩瓔珞本業經 T 1485.24.1021a5〕 Also written 無明地.
