Bankei
- (1622–93). Japanese Rinzai monk, also known as Eitaku 永琢. From Harima 播磨 (present-day Hyogo prefecture). While studying the Chinese classic Daxue 大學 as a youth, he became puzzled about the meaning of "luminous virtue" 明德. At seventeen he entered the order at Zuiōji 隨鷗寺 under the auspices of Unpo 雲甫, but continued to be absorbed in the problem of the meaning of this phrase, and traveled about in inquiry of the matter. As a consequence, at the age of twenty-six, he experienced a great awakening, but being unable to confirm his awakening with any current Japanese masters, he consulted with, and received confirmation from Chan teachers visiting from China. He became an influential teacher, calling his style of Zen "unborn Zen" 不生禪. [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Iwanami]
