continuing consciousness
- In the system of the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith, the continuing consciousness (which Wonhyo correlates to the Yogâcāra mental consciousness — mano-vijñāna 意識) is thinking that continues unbroken without cessation. For example, once a deluded thought arises, it continues without limit, thus carrying karma along with it. The fifth of the five kinds of consciousness taught in the Awakening of Faith 〔起信論 T 1666.32.577b13〕. [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Soothill, Hirakawa]
- In the Yogâcāra system, equivalent to the ādāna-vijñāna 阿陀那識, depending on the context, applicable to either the manas or ālayavijñāna, which continue without lapse at the subliminal level. One of the ten names of the seventh consciousness 七識十名. [resp. Charles Muller]
