Dharmarakṣa
- (230?-316) The most significant Chinese scripture translator prior to Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什. He worked at various sites in China, among them Chang-an and Loyang. He translated over 150 seminal works, among which are the early translations of the Lotus Sutra 正法華經 and Daśabhūmika-sūtra 十地經. Originally born in Dunhuang 敦煌 around 230 of Indian and Scythian parents, he entered the order early in life, had wide acquaintance with Confucian works, and traveled extensively. His work was widely seen as building the foundation of Buddhism in North China and setting the stage for Dao'an and Kumārajīva in the centuries that followed. His name is also transliterated into Chinese as 曇摩羅察, 曇摩羅刹, and 竺曇摩羅察. He is also known as the Dunhuang Trepiṭaka 燉煌三藏 the Dunhuang Bodhisattva 燉煌菩薩. 〔法華經 T 262.9.1a13 〕 [resp.
