effort
- Exertion, vigor, diligence, assiduity; zeal (Skt. vīrya; Tib. brtson 'grus). The mental operation of continuously cultivating good dharmas and cutting off evil; pure or unadulterated progress, i.e. 勤; zealous, courageously progressing in the good and eliminating the evil. It implies strenuous and sustained effort to overcome laziness, as well as the right endeavor to attain dhyāna, as well as strength of character and the persistent effort for the well-being of others. Right effort known as vīryabala 精進力 is required to overcome laziness and deviation from meditative concentration. One of the six perfections 六波羅蜜. One of the ten good mental condition dharmas 大善地法 explained in the Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya, one of the eleven good mental function factors 十一善 in the doctrine of the Yogâcāra school 百法. One of the five spiritual faculties 五根 (indriya), one of the five powers 五力 (bala), one of the seven factors of enlightenment (bodhyaṅga) 七菩提分 and is identical with right effort 正精進 of the Noble Eightfold Path.
