to abandon cyclic existence
- To turn the back on and leave the (the world). This is a term used by Kumārajīva to translate the Sanskrit vimokṣa. In the Dazhidu lun 大智度論 T 1509.25.215b29, the term is glossed as meaning to "turn away" 背 from the five desires, becoming purified of them, and to be free of mental attachments. Thus, it is called "to abandon" 背捨. Lamotte suspects this gloss is an insertion by Kumārajīva to justify the Chinese, but it should be noted that "abandoning, giving up" is a reading indicated for vimokṣa by Monier-Williams. The eight kinds of abandoning in Abhidharma theories are a framework describing a step by step process to attainment of the complete mental state of cessation (nirodha-samāpatti) through the practice of the four dhyānas and four formless samādhis, and so the term refers to the "abandonment" of the obstacles to that attainment. See 八背捨. 〔起信論疏筆削記 T 1848.44.402c29〕 (Skt. vaimukhya; dveṣitva, dveṣin, vimukhatā, vimukhī-√bhū, *vi-√muc) [resp. Charles Patton, Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Soothill, Hirakawa]
