- In the context of logical argumentation, to contest; object; repudiate, refute (the validity of a doctrine or view), such as when one repudiates the Mahāyāna teaching, or doctrine of emptiness, etc. To deny the existence of something. (Skt.*apa-vad, apavāda, apavādaka, apavādika, apavādita, apavādin, apa-√vad; Tib. skur pa 'debs pa). [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura]
- In the Vinaya texts, the term is often used more in the sense of "accuse" (or an accusation), which may, depending on the circumstances, be either done with due cause, or be baseless. In either case, it is considered to be an offense, but the seriousness of the offense is contingent upon the veracity of the charge (Skt. abhyākhyāna). [resp. Charles Muller]
