transforming consciousness
- Karmic consciousness, evolving consciousness, forthcoming consciousness; manifestly functioning consciousness. A reference to the other seven consciousnesses that are generated from the base consciousness, or ālayavijñāna 阿賴耶識. These are the mentation (manas) consciousness 末那識, the thinking consciousness 意識, and the five sense consciousnesses 五識. Some Yogâcāra scholars consider the existence of the afflictions to be limited to these seven, while others theorize afflictive activity in the ālaya as well. 〔二障義 HBJ 1.790a 〕 (Skt. pravṛtti-vijñāna; Tib. 'jug pa'i rnam par shes pa) One of the ten names of the seventh consciousness 七識十名. [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): YBh-Ind, JEBD, Hirakawa]
- In some contexts, a reference to the ālayavijñāna being transformed 轉依 into the four forms of purified cognition 四智.The transformation of the defiled consciousness into pure consciousness (vijñāna-parāvṛtti). [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Soothill, JEBD]
- In the Awakening of Faith, knowledge or mind being stirred, the external world enters into consciousness. This is the second of the five processes of mental evolution in the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith—the transforming consciousness. 〔起信論 T 1666.32.577b8〕 [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura]
- Unenlightened, deluded consciousness that is manifested in association with the objective realm. [resp. Charles Muller]
