to transform
- Transformation; to alter; alterity; especially seen in Yogâcāra discourse, referring to all phenomena as transformations of consciousness. In each moment, consciousness becomes other than itself—other than what it was in the prior instant. In Sāṃkhya philosophy this referred to the transformation of latencies into active manifestation, where the world comes into being from fundamental qualities, implying that such effects are already latent in their causes. While this notion of inherent causation was refuted by the Buddhist idea of dependent arising, the Sautrāntikas and Yogâcāras nonetheless ended up creating a related concept in the form of seeds 種子 (bīja) that transform into manifest appearances. The Sanskrit pariṇāma is also rendered into Chinese simply as 變. *nirmāṇa, parāvṛtta, pariṇati, pariṇāmanā, pariṇāmanânyathābhāva, pariṇāmika, praṇata, vikāra, vikāra-dharmiṇītva, vikārita, vi-√kṛ, vikriyā, vipariṇāma).
