Kāśyapīya
- The name of one of the eighteen (or twenty) early Buddhist schools 小乘二十部, and eleven Ārya-sthavira-nikāya schools 上座部, also called Haimavata. One of the producers of the five Vinayas 五部律, they were originally Sarvâstivādins 說一切有部, splitting off in the third century after the passing of the historical Buddha. The school is named after the Sthavira monk Kāśyapa 迦葉波 (one of the many in Buddhist history with this name), the leader of Aśoka's mission to the Haimavata country. Later the Haimavata Sthaviras became an independent school called Kāśyapīya. Kāśyapa means Drinker of Light—thus this the school is also called 飮光部. Doctrinally, they remain fairly close to Sarvâstivāda, but have a distinctive theory of instantaneity and the existence of dharmas in past, present, and future. Their doctrine also bears similarity to that of Dharmaguptaka. Similar to the Mahāsāṃghikas and Sarvâstivādins, the Kāśyapīyas held that the arhat is not fully perfect and can regress. For more details; see Warder 2000: 277. In Chinese texts the Kāśyapīya school is called 迦葉維部 (1465.24.900c5, T 1470.24.926a2) and 迦葉部 (T 1460.24.665b9) and 迦葉遺 (T 1804.40.3b24). Also written 迦葉毘, 迦葉維, 迦葉臂耶, 迦攝卑, and 柯尸悲與. According to the Śāriputraparipṛcchā 舍利弗問經 the members of this school wore magnolia-colored robes (T 1465.24.900c16). The only complete extant work this school is the Chinese translation of their Prātimokṣasūtra 解脫戒經. An incomplete Chinese translation of the Saṃyuktâgama, T 100, is also attributed to them; see Warder 2000: 6.
