- The seventh patriarch of the Tiantai school 天台宗 in China, a native of Chang'an 長安 during the Tang. He was popularly known as Hsing-tao-tsun-che (Kodosonja) or Chin-kuan-he-shang (Shikan-osho). After having worked for a time as a government official, during the Dali Era (766–779), he entered the Buddhist order under Zhanran (Tanner) of the Miao-le (Myōraku) temple in Ch'ang-chou doshu), becoming fully ordained at the age of 24. He first studied the Vinaya 戒律, and then under Zhanran focused on the Mohe zhiguan and other major works of Tiantai. In 796 he entered the Guojingsi 國淸寺 on Mt. Tiantai 天台山, where he lectured on the Fahua xuanyi 法華玄義, Fahua wenju 法華文句, and Mohe zhiguan 摩訶止觀—the three major texts of Tiantai 三大部. He is said to have transmitted Tiantai teachings to Saichō 最澄 in 805-6. He passed away at the Guojingsi at an unknown date. His posthumous title is Xingdao zunzhe 興道尊者 and he was known colloquially as Reverend Cessation and Observation 止觀和尙. His disciples included Shousu 守素, Guangxiu 廣修, Qianshu 乾淑, and others. Among his writings were the Da panniepan jing shu siji 大般涅槃經疏私記 (10 fasc.), Weimojing shu siji 維摩經疏私記 (3 fasc.), and the Mohe zhiguan ji zhong yiyi 摩訶止觀記中異義 (1 fasc.). 〔宋高僧傳, 釋門正統, 佛祖統紀〕[resp.
