- Transliteration of the Sanskrit, meaning forest. Solitude; quiet place; located far from the populated towns and cities. Interpreted by 無諍聲 no sound of discord; 閑靜 shut in and quiet; 遠離 far removed; 空寂 uninhabited and still; a lonely abode 500 bow-lengths from any village. (Pāli arañña). This is then extended to refer to a quiet place where monks and various kinds of religious practitioners dwell to carry out their practices free from secular involvements and attractions. It is further extended to refer to an actual hermitage where disciplines and meditation are practiced. An āraṇyaka 阿蘭若迦 is someone who lives there. Three kinds of occupants are given: 達磨阿蘭若迦
dharma-āraṇyaka; 摩祭阿蘭若迦
mātaṅga-āraṇyaka, and 檀陀阿蘭若迦
daṇḍaka-āraṇyaka. Other forms are: 阿蘭那, 阿蘭攘; 阿蘭陀, 阿蘭陁; 阿練若, 阿練茄; 阿練茹, 阿蘭拏; abbreviated as 蘭若 and 練若, and translated as 山林 and 荒野. 〔四分律 T 1428.22.573c11〕 (Skt. āraṇyaka) [resp. Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, Soothill, JEBD, Hirakawa]
